Here's a thought: Confidence.
Most all struggle with it. From celebrities and wealthy CEO’s to student athletes we all lack confidence somewhere, but why?
Well the #1 reason is the enemy. He feeds off making you feel like crap; the opposite of what the Lord wants you to feel.
When people try to gain confidence they often look to worldly things like a new car or being the best dressed or from accolades they receive from athletic pursuit. Being or having such things can garner looks from crowds, but those are all temporary and perishable things.
God. Father. Lord. Jesus. This is an Imperishable Thing. Forever looking out for our own good. He is where we need to put our confidence and also where we can gain confidence by looking at His character.
Having confidence in the Lord, you are setting your eyes on something Holy that no one or nothing can ever take away. Age, loss, injuries can all strip you of the materialistic and worldly attributes. As these fade, our Father remains just as perfect as He was, is, and will always be. Nothing can take your confidence away when you place it in the Lord our God.
Deuteronomy 31:6 says "He will never leave you nor forsake you." By receiving confidence from God, you can walk into a room and know you are loved by the One who matters. The One who loved us so much He sent his perfect son down to communicate with us and then die a hellish death on the cross so that we might be right with God and enter eternity with Him.
From being a girl and listening to other girls speak and act, I have noticed girls tend to more outwardly express their struggles with confidence when compared to guys.
Girls, you do not need validation from other people, or likes on Instagram, or compliments to gain confidence. The real answer to a lifetime of feeling fulfilled and worthy is spending more time with Him. Spend time in His word, knowing He cherishes you infinitely. He knows you and loves you and as a child of the Almighty God, confidence can and should radiate throughout your heart, soul, and mind.
Guys, I cannot see inside of your minds, but I do go to a school comprised of 75% men so I have been able to listen. Often it stems from girls. How many numbers can you get or how many people have you hooked up with? 1 Timothy 5:2 says “Treat older women as mothers, younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.” Have confidence in treating women confidently with respect and compassion. Find confidence in God and what He has given you and don’t miss your calling by spending time thinking about girls.
I was listening to a sermon this last Sunday and my favorite pastor, Ben Stuart, was talking about how you first need to pursue the Lord and find yourself in Him. Never stop chasing Him. While you are chasing Him, God might throw someone who you are attracted to to run with you and ya’ll might have chemistry and connect and push each other in a stronger relationship with God. Who knows…you could even get married! This type of relationship is worthwhile because it has something everlasting in the middle guiding the relationship that will never fade. Ben described this as a “companion mentality”. To go deeper into this please go look up “Who to Date – Ben Stuart” on YouTube. You will not regret it! It is such an incredible sermon that reveals so much not only in regards to relationships, but how to live life in general.
Finding confidence in God comes from knowing that He loves you. 1 John 4:8 says, “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” Oh how He loves you. Sometimes I cannot even fathom how God can love as much as He says He does, but sweet child of God, He loves you beyond measures.
His grace is astounding. Ephesians 4:7 says, “But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ appointed it.” He appointed grace to each and every one of us.
His promise for eternal life is comforting, and He knows each and every one of us individually and values us all.
1 John 5:14 ~ “This is the confidence we have in approaching Go: that is we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.”
Everyone seeks value and here it is given by the most loving, important, and almighty. He listens.
Philippians 1:6 ~ “being confident of this, that he who began work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:13 ~ “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
Many others base confidence on conquests, be that athletic, academic, or rank. I believe these are admirable endeavors to understandably take pride in, but is not where confidence should be rooted.
It is easy for me to write, "Go find your confidence in the Lord," but is a lot harder to do. Confidence is something I have struggled with and continually challenge myself to dive into Scripture, read, journal, and pray. If this is something you struggle with I challenge you to dive in with me and see how your relationship with Him grows. Watch as your life, thoughts, and actions change, too!
